Drivers who use 167th Ave SE near Snohomish will need to find another way starting today.

Snohomish County is shutting down the road entirely for nearly three months to replace a collapsing fishway and a 99-year-old culvert underneath the road.

The full closure runs through the end of September 2026, according to the county's Surface Water Management Division project page.

The county is removing two failing structures: a fishway built in 1985 that is collapsing as the stream flows beneath it, eroding the channel, and an undersized concrete culvert installed in 1927 that is degrading. The replacement culvert will meet Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife fish passage requirements.

Northbound traffic will be rerouted along Trombley Road and Roosevelt Road to 159th Ave SE. Southbound traffic will use Westwick Road and 100th St SE to reach 159th Ave SE.

No single-lane bypass will be available. The road is fully closed to through traffic for the duration of construction.

The project is funded entirely by Surface Water Management Utility funds. No state or federal grant money is listed for this work. The county has not published a total project cost.

The 167th Ave SE project is one of several fish passage culvert replacements Snohomish County's Surface Water Management Division is running this summer. A parallel project on Grandview Road in Arlington also begins today, using a single-lane bypass with temporary signals rather than a full closure. A third project on S. Machias Road near Snohomish is also scheduled for completion by September 2026.

The county notes the schedule may shift based on weather, permitting, or equipment availability.
