Everett Public Schools students who speak a language other than English can turn that fluency into high school credit during the 2026-27 school year.

The district announced Wednesday, Sept. 2, that registration is open for the World Language Assessment, or WLA. Students in grades 7 through 12 have until Friday, Oct. 2, to sign up.

The test measures a student's ability to read, write, speak and listen in a language other than English.

Students who demonstrate fluency can earn high school world language credits on their transcript.

Registration happens at each student's school office. The fee is $10, due at sign-up. Testing takes place during the school day at the student's own building.

The deadline lands one month into the new school year, which began Wednesday, Sept. 2, for students in grades 1 through 12.

About 21% of district students identified as Asian or Pacific Islander and 21% as Hispanic in the 2023-24 school year, according to federal education data cited by Ballotpedia.

The district did not specify which languages are eligible, how many credits a student can earn, or when testing will take place after registration closes. Families can contact their student's school for details.
