Seattle Sounders captain Cristian Roldan is rehabbing a quad injury with no announced return timeline, putting his availability for the club's Cascadia derby against the Portland Timbers nex Thursday at Lumen Field in doubt.

Roldan, 31, has been working out on his own at the University of Washington, where he played collegiately, separate from the U.S. Men's National Team.

The Seattle Times reported he was doing on-field drills there on July 5. The quad injury kept him off the last two USMNT game-day rosters during the World Cup.

The injury capped a frustrating tournament for Seattle's all-time leader in outfield appearances. Roldan made the 26-man roster but never saw the pitch.

He was available for the group-stage win over Australia at Lumen Field on Friday, June 19, yet didn't play. By the knockout round, the quad injury kept him off the bench entirely.

This was Roldan's second World Cup roster. He also went unused in Qatar in 2022. Roldan was one of just eight MLS players on World Cup rosters who never appeared.

"We're all rooting for him," Sounders winger Paul Rothrock said. "I would have loved to see him come in in the last game in Seattle. It would've given the game a boost, too. But I'm not the coach. I'm a big, biased fan of Cristian."

The U.S. run ended July 6, with a 4-1 loss to Belgium in the round of 16 at Lumen Field. That match was the sixth and final World Cup game hosted in Seattle.

Now the Sounders shift back to league play. Seattle sits at 7-3-3 in MLS and faces Portland on July 16. No official timeline for Roldan's return has been released by the club.

Before the tournament, Roldan told U.S. Soccer he was eager to play on home soil, calling Seattle "a place that I call home and have called home for a while." He said the thought of playing a World Cup match there gave him goosebumps. The quad had other plans.
