A new Everett nonprofit wants to make sure kids in south Everett start the school year looking and feeling ready.

Asc3nd Collective will give away free haircuts and school supplies at its "Fresh Fade, Fresh Grade" event Sunday, Aug. 30, from noon to 3 p.m. at Tangles & Locs salon, 7425 Hardeson Road.

The event falls four days before Everett Public Schools opens the 2026-27 school year on Sept. 2.

Haircuts and supplies are first-come, first-served while capacity lasts. The organization is encouraging families to arrive early.

The supply list includes backpacks, pencils, colored pencils, crayons, markers, glue sticks, folders, notebooks, pens, highlighters and tissues. Food and family-friendly activities round out the afternoon.

Everything is free.

Otha and Elisha Minnifield founded Asc3nd Collective with a focus on mentoring young people through leadership, life skills, athletics and community connection, according to the organization's website.

The Hardeson Road address doubles as the nonprofit's home base, sharing space with Tangles & Locs.

The group ran a school supply drive from July 15 through Aug. 15 to stock up for Sunday's giveaway.

The organization states on its website that its mission extends beyond single events, describing the back-to-school giveaway as one piece of a year-round effort to invest in young people through mentorship and opportunity.

The event website, asc3nd.org, is available in English and Spanish. Families can RSVP online, though an RSVP does not guarantee a haircut or supplies.

The Everett Herald first reported on the event Tuesday, Aug. 25.

The salon sits off Hardeson Road near Casino Road in south Everett.
