Snohomish County has started installing flashing warning beacons at six pedestrian crossings near schools in South Everett, a $256,000 project aimed at making those crosswalks more visible to drivers.

Snohomish County Public Works is adding rectangular rapid flashing beacons, known as RRFBs, to crossings prioritized near schools with heavy vehicle and foot traffic.

The county's project page says the beacons make crossing locations more visible to motorists and promote pedestrian safety.

The state Transportation Improvement Board, a Washington State agency, and the County Road Fund are paying for the work. The county designated it Project #RC1831.

Construction began in late summer and will continue into early fall 2026. The county has not published the names of the six specific intersections receiving beacons. A map on the project page shows locations in the South Everett and Lynnwood area, but individual street names could not be confirmed from available county documents.

Snohomish County Public Works announced the project on April 28 on its official X account, saying it planned to upgrade pedestrian crossing signs at six intersections with high volumes of vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Construction is now underway.

The county said pedestrian access will remain open throughout the work. Motorists may experience minor traffic delays near construction zones.

The RRFB project is separate from another Snohomish County Public Works effort near Fairmount Elementary in South Everett. That project, #RC1785, is upgrading curb ramps and accessible pedestrian signal pushbuttons at two intersections on Beverly Park Road. Snohomish County Public Works announced Aug. 3 that construction had begun on that project.

Together, the two projects represent a broader push by the county to improve pedestrian safety near South Everett schools ahead of the fall semester.
